Green Eyed Woman Bill Jones Dec 2002
Kind of a "Gentle on my Mind" feeling.

I met her by the statue of some forgotten hero from a misguided war

She took me by the hand, led me down past the fountains to the watch tower door

She said fate brought us together as we watched the barges on the river so still

And it was then I realized she believed in fate more that I ever will
We walked down to the landing, now abandoned since the river changed its course
Passed through the empty freight yards, crossed the river bridge, saw campfires burning in the north
She fell into peaceful dreaming after we found shelter in an old deserted mill
As I left her sleeping I realized she believes in dreaming more than I ever will
The next time that I saw her it was in a crowded market by the old city gate
She saw me through the crowd and stabbed me with a look I mistook for hate
She gathered up her baskets then crossed the last embankment to the bottom of the hill
When she looked back I realized she believed in goodbye more than I ever will

Many years have gone by since I left her standing there
I’ve often wondered why I didn’t dare

to find out What it was all about
I heard her name one evening while talking to some friends about those we used to know
Someone saw her at a bus stop on a dirty downtown street before the last winter’s snow
She said she was leaving with some kid who joined the army, of this town she’d had her fill
It was then I realized she believed in starting over more than I ever will.
It was maybe three years later in western Oklahoma I saw her again
She had a child on her hip and didn’t see me hiding by the newspaper stand
I watched her with her baby, then caught a ride with a trucker who had no time left to kill
When she waved at me I realized she believed in happy endings more than I ever will
Many a years gone by since I left her standing there
I’ve often wondered why I didn’t dare
Enough to find out
What it was all about
And one day I called her at the end of a decade that had left me bruised and low
Her voice sounded familiar, her breath on the receiver as she said hello
I listened to her breathing tried to find the words I’d thought to say right up until
She said one day maybe you’ll realize you must believe in something but I’m afraid you never will
